About Michael

No one should be defined by the hardest part of their story.

I’m Michael Uptegraff, founder of Driven for Change. I help churches, nonprofits, and community leaders become better prepared to support people facing mental health challenges, trauma, substance use, and difficult transitions.

My experiences did not give me all the answers. They taught me how important it is to listen before judging.

Michael Uptegraff

This work is personal to me.

I did not enter this work because mental health and trauma sounded like interesting subjects.

I entered it because I understand what it means to carry experiences that continue affecting you long after the moment has passed.

I grew up in an abusive and trauma-filled home. For years, I carried the effects of those experiences without fully understanding how they shaped the way I thought, trusted, responded, and related to other people.

Later, I served for 20 years in the United States Navy. That experience taught me discipline, leadership, responsibility, and resilience. It also added experiences and pressures that had to be understood and processed honestly.

My story is not one of having everything figured out. It is a story of learning that difficult experiences can shape us without having to permanently control us.

Understanding gave me language. Faith gave me hope.

Two things changed the direction of my life.

The first was gaining a practical understanding of trauma—how it affects the mind, emotions, relationships, behavior, and a person’s ability to trust.

The second was finding salvation and hope in Jesus Christ.

Through Christ, I came to know the steady and unconditional love of a Heavenly Father. That gave me a foundation I had not experienced growing up and changed the way I viewed both my own life and the lives of people around me.

My past did not disappear, but it developed into a deeper compassion for people who feel broken, forgotten, or uncertain about what comes next.

“In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

Michael’s original biography describes these two anchors as a practical understanding of trauma and his personal salvation in Jesus Christ.

Today, I walk alongside people rebuilding their lives.

My daily work places me directly alongside individuals who are leaving incarceration, completing addiction treatment, navigating the court system, and trying to establish a more stable future.

Many are carrying shame, damaged relationships, employment barriers, and the fear that their worst decision will be the only thing other people ever see.

My role is not to judge them.

My role is to help them take practical steps toward stability, employment, resilience, restored relationships, and a healthier future for themselves and their families.

I also serve young people through local ministry and work with churches, nonprofits, and community leaders who want to care for people well but may not feel prepared for the difficult situations they encounter.

I have seen the difference one informed, compassionate person can make. That is why I created Driven for Change.

Lived Experience

Michael understands that trauma, recovery, and resilience are not just concepts to be discussed. His teaching is shaped by personal experience and years of walking alongside people through difficult transitions.

Practical Preparation

Each training is designed to give participants useful language, clear next steps, and tools they can apply in real situations—not just information they will quickly forget.

A Study Presence

Michael creates a setting where people can ask honest questions, discuss sensitive subjects, and learn without feeling embarrassed or judged.

EQUIPPED TO SERVE PEOPLE WELL

My Preparation includes:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Workforce Education from Southern Illinois University
  • Advanced training in Organizational Communication through Murray State University
  • Leadership training through the United States Navy War College
  • A 20-year career in the United States Navy
  • Certification in Biblical Counseling and Trauma
  • Service as a community instructor for Mental Health First Aid and Trauma Principles
  • Ongoing work toward a master’s degree in Biblical Counseling at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

TRAINING GROUNDED IN MORE THAN THEORY

I view education and training as tools for serving others—not as titles to collect. Each experience has helped me better understand the connection between human behavior, organizational support, spiritual care, and practical community response.

Helping communities move from uncertainty to action.

Compassion Before Judgment

We begin by seeing the person, listening to their story, and responding with dignity and care.

Preparation Before Crisis

We help organizations develop the knowledge, confidence, and systems they need before difficult situations arise.

Change That Lasts

Change That Lasts

Success is not measured by completing a training session. It is measured by healthier organizations, stronger communities, and people receiving the support they need.

Prepare your people to serve with confidence.
